This is another cover for this year’s volume of The Collegian for Issue 8. This was made in the month of March, which is Women’s Month. This was the theme of Issue 8, and I was yet again tasked with creating the cover art. At first, I struggled with coming up with ideas for the illustration. I sketched out multiple failed ideas, but ultimately came up with the idea of doing colored silhouettes of women. I searched online for model references and chose four for the cover. All the women were diverse, and I wanted to make that clear. Collegian covers are usually simple, but not so simple that they look boring. I decided that for the colored silhouette I would do their skin color, their hair color and texture, their lips, simple details for ears, and whatever jewelry they may have been wearing. For this process, I had each portrait on my off-hand so I could reference it easily. For each silhouette, I decided to skip the sketching process and clean up any mistakes I had made with the eraser tool. I did an outline of each woman’s face and then colored it in with their corresponding skin tones. I repeated that step for the hair, lips, and eyebrows. I made the background a solid pink color and left enough space above for the title. Lastly, I added the jewelry on a separate layer, in case I messed up and needed to erase. I added the Issue’s title “Empowered: Why We Celebrate Women” and the cover art was complete.
