The Rock Climber is the very first cover graphic that I created for this year’s volume of The Collegian. The theme for this issue was “All About ASWWU.” I got the idea to create a rock climber from one of the Sub groups of ASWWU, ASWWU Outdoors. They frequent rock-climbing events and outings, and I thought that would be the perfect way to represent the Student Leader group. This graphic was made using Adobe Illustrator, which I had learned how to use a quarter prior. I started out with a basic sketch, the big sun and rocks being the first to be drawn, then sketched out the Issue title. I then found a reference to a female rock climber online and used that as my reference. After I sketched the female rock climber, I transferred the sketch to Illustrator and made it a template layer. I began with outlining the sketch and filling the shapes with color. I wanted the sun to have rays that looked like the different colors of a sunset, so that’s what I did. I then did the shapes and outlines for the female rock climber. I moved on to creating the text for the title. Using the same technique I traced the letter outlines with the pen tool and filled with a blue color. I then added some finishing shadows and highlights and off to my manager it went.
