This poster was an assignment for the class on “Visual Storytelling.” The assignment was to create some sort of advertisement to practice presenting a Pitch Deck. We were given creative freedom of what to create, however, it had to connect with us on some sort of level. I decided to create a poster that brings awareness to Sexual Assault. As a victim to SA, this piece was important to me and I wanted to create something that captures the dark feeling that SA gives. Inspiration for this piece came from awareness itself. The title “Speak Up” is something I thought would be best. It represents bringing awareness by talking about it, being up front, and, of course, speaking up. To achieve the idea of speaking up, I decided to draw multiple, expressive, open mouths. I wanted them to look like they were yelling out or spitting. Instead of the traditional black on white illustration, I chose the white on clack look to represent how the dark and lonely feeling of being assaulted is. I gathered a wide variety of mouth references, even taking pictures of my own to get the exact expression I wanted. I sketched out the mouths with white, and when I was done, I decided to leave it as a sketch rather than doing line art. Yes the sketch makes it look messy, but that was the whole feeling I wanted to portray. I didn’t want the words to take up the whole space, but I still wanted them to be visible. I chose a crimson red color and did handwritten lettering for the text. In the top left it says, “Be Loud.” In the bottom right corner it says, “Speak Up,” but the word up is replaced with an arrow to create a direction of motion to keep the viewer looking. I created a white border, cleaned up any mistakes, and the poster was complete.
