This piece was made with the school newspaper cover in mind. It was Issue 4 of this year’s volume of The Collegian. The overall theme of the newspaper was “What Makes WWU Unique,” which I had used as the title. I had creative freedom for composing this digital cover, and I had decided to go with some kind of bug. Since unique means “being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else,” I connected that with the pattern of a butterfly or a moth’s wing pattern. No pair of wings is the same. I began with sketching a simple outline of a moth and some grass-like items. I didn’t want the background to take away the attention of the moth, so I decided to make it quite simple. When deciding on what kind of moth to do, I knew that I wanted to use one that had eye-like patterns. I took inspiration from the Polyphemus Moth to create this piece. I began with flat color layers and then later went in with detailing and line art. I then focused on making the background fairly plain to, like said before, keep the attention on the moth. I finished the pieces with some more details and mailed it off to my manager
